Vale of Leven Academy pupils have taken part in a S2 Interdisciplinary event for Fair Trade. This event was led by S2 pupils. The purpose was not only to encourage fairer trading but also to encourage pupils to become responsible citizens, raise pupil confidence, self esteem and motivation.
This event started with S2 pupils taking year one through to year four assemblies. At these assemblies S2 informed us of how unfair trading can be. Pupils were encouraged to use their "voice" to promote the Fair-trade cause.
Many departments were involved. Some examples of activities are:
Technical designing Fair-trade food and drink labels.
Home Economics cooking Fair Trade banana and chocolate muffins. They also did the banana activity to raise awareness about the unfairness involved in banana production.
Physical education pupils learned Sumba dancing. A Football tournament has also taken place using Fair-trade footballs and Fair-trade oranges. The team were named after appropriate Fair-trade countries and wore the country's colours.
In ICT S2 pupils raised awareness and promoted Faire Trade by preparing their own PowerPoint slide show and individually made their own presentations to their class members.
In Music S2 pupils did an analysis of the music used in the Fair-trade Adverts, using musical concept words they had learned in S1 and S2.
On Friday 5th March S2 pupils at Vale of Leven Academy opened their first Fair Trade Tuck Shop. This was a great success and it is hoped that the Fair Trade Tuck Shop will continue to trade on a weekly basis.
