St Johns Primary
Institution: St John's Primary School (Portobello) Achieved Fairtrade Status: August 2011 Number of pupils: Number of staff:
St. John's Primary School in Portobello has just been awarded Fair Trade status after submitting 2 years worth of evidence at the end of the last academic year. The Fair Trade group have sold Fair Trade and Traidcraft products at school fairs (with support from the Just World Shop), sold Fair Trade smoothies (with sponsorship from Scotmid), created a film which highlighted the difference Fair Trade makes to the lives of farmers and their families and started a group page using the GLOW education intranet. Classes have studied Fair Trade as part of the curriculum in P5 and during Fair Trade fortnight in February many more classes took part in a range of class lessons. Staff and visitors have also been encouraged to use Fair Trade products in the school staffroom. Mr Burgess and Mrs McMorris who led the Fair Trade group were delighted with the news and in particular the efforts of the children who gave up lunchtimes to be part of the steering group. The challenge for the staff and pupils now is to continue spreading the Fair Trade message in the school, in the home and in the wider community. It's certainly great to be Fair Trade!
